Mike
Shimmin
Mike
has been playing percussion since the age of eight. Throughout high school
he played in marching and symphonic bands, in addition to the high school
jazz band where he earned the prestigious award "Best Jazz Soloist"
in 2000 at the national jazz band competition
in Chicago,
and the Louis Armstrong
Jazz award from his band director upon
graduation. Mike also has a very strong background in hand percussion
- a child prodigy, he has sat in with the popular Detroit 'ethnic-rock'
band Immigrant Suns since the tender age of ten years old. Currently Mike
is a Percussion Performance/Jazz Studies major at Western Michigan University,
studying with Professor Judy Moonert and jazz legend Billy Hart. In addition
to Millish, he plays with University Symphonic Band (of which he is Principal
Percussionist), the WMU Jazz Lab Band, the University Percussion Ensemble,
the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra, and recently with Armenian musician
Ara Toupouzian.
